| Abstract: | In this study of the word agape in chapter XIII of the first Epistle to the Corinthians, I intend to examine briefly the recent exegetical interpretations of agape in this chapter and to add a critical note at the end. What is the real purport of agape in this text? What does St. Paul primarily mean by this word? Has Paul primarily in mind man's love for God or man's love for his neighbour? or has he both? These are in general the questions that have offered no little difficulty to quite a number of biblical scholars who have attempted to give the right answer. |
