Abstract

Sole belongs to the order of the Pleuronettiformes, universally known to be formed from species of fish that in the phase adult they wear both eyes on one side. According to Bini (Atlas), the genus Solea, established by Quensel in 1806, is present in the Mediterranean with twelve different species. In reality, in common practice, that is, with fishermen and fishmongers, no distinctions are made between the various species. There are different types of lexemes that indicate the sole in the Mediterranean but the names of sole used in the Arab countries are quite different. This article indicates the Arab terms related to the sole in the Mediterranean. On a side not, a lexeme is an abstract unit of morphological analysis in linguistics, that roughly corresponds to a set of forms taken by a single word.
