Abstract: This short study is part of a wider investigation into the rhetorical and discourse features of Amos 5,1-6,14. The purpose of this wider research will be to demonstrate that this text may be read as one piece of communication. In this present paper we shall investigate how the author is organizing his material into three 'stanzas', an introductory piece (5,1-3), and two larger ones, each introduced by the messenger formula in 5,4 and 16. In this study the author examines also the rhetorical function of the initial "appealfor attention" in 5,la which here serves to introduce the unity as a whole. "Word" assumes a special meaning.
