| Abstract: | The major question this paper addresses is the extent to which formal education can be effective in the bringing about of a more equitable and just social order. A variety of sociological theories have strongly suggested that educational systems function to reproduce the status quo rather than to transform it. In this article, a brief review of these theories is first given; this serves as a suitable context for the exploration of current perspectives on transformative education . |
