A Maltese Monk in Scotland

Abstract

The brief research article focuses upon the thirty or so years which the young Luigi Caruana spent in Scotland, in the renowned Benedictine Abbey of Fort Augustus in Inverness. Luigi, the Maltese monk in Scotland, is none other but Dom Mauro Caruana O.S.B. who was appointed Archbishop of Malta in 1915. The article gives a number of details about certain milestones in Caruana's Benedictine vocation, as well as his active role in the monastery and in Catholic life in Scotland in the last decade of the 19th century and the first of the 20th. The article also gives the highlights of his episcopal appointment and his subsequent consecration by Cardinal Merry del Val. The text is accompanied by two rare illustrations obtained from the Fort Augustus Abbey which has since closed down.
