Abstract: To many educators the term 'educational technology' creates visions of sophisticated and wonderous machines supported by necessarily expensive and highly complex organizations, the panacea of all educational ills. Many other educators regard educational technology as an inhuman" mechanical placebo that relegates teaching and learning to a series of impersonal and educationally suspect manipulation of switches and gadgets. Both views are extreme and wrong since they stress only the mechanical element of educational technology" and ignore the more pervading, if less conspicuous, intellectual element.
