The developing role of the European central bank within financial markets

Abstract

This dissertation presents an analysis on the developing role of the European Central Bank (ECB) as a consequence of the 2007 financial crisis. The research begins with the general role of the ECB and continues by explaining how the role of this institution had to be developed during and after the current financial crisis in order to mitigate its impact. Interviews were conducted with the Malta Financial Services Authority and the Central Bank of Malta in order to gather the necessary information for the analysis of chapter four. Additionally, the dissertation concludes by a number of recommendations and remarks on how the ECB can further improve its role.
