Abstract: The thematic approach is a pedagogy by which students learn areas of the curriculum in an interconnected way through the use of themes to acquire knowledge naturally and through a less fragmented approach. This case study concentrates on the implementation of the thematic approach across the primary curriculum as an instruction that enhances students’ autonomy and creativity. This local study allowed me to explore whether the thematic approach crosses the boundaries of subject division to stimulate students’ imagination and help them make associations between various learning domains. The objective behind this research was to discover the perceptions that primary teachers and school leaders hold on the integrated approach. I aimed to elicit their insights and opinions about this type of instruction while discovering what is being done to help and hinder such an approach. A mixed-methods approach was used to collect data and to help me answer my research questions. Three semi-structured interviews were carried out with members of the Senior Management Team (SMT) while a focus group interview and questionnaire surveys were carried out with primary teachers to further enquire the implementation of the thematic approach across the primary curriculum. Similarity between SMT members and class teachers resulted in the data collected as they believe that the integrated approach is an effective methodology that allows students to make relevant links to their everyday life. Finally, the researcher proposed areas for further research and action in the field of education in order to enhance students’ learning and equip them with the needed skills necessary for the challenges that the twenty first century poses.
