Abstract: | The religious and military Order of the Knights of St. John sought to affirm its destiny in stone. Its long military history can be said to have been moulded by ramparts of stone. Indeed, the one constant feature of the Hospitaller war machine throughout its long six hundred-year history was its heavy reliance on formidable strongholds and forts. In all the theatres of war in which the Order established its convent - the Latin East, Rhodes, and Malta - fortifications were the Order’s prime instrument of war. |
