Abstract: This dissertation explores the role of development plans in the establishment of a welfare state and the strengthening of the social conditions of women. The first chapter focuses on the pillars of Maltese society and the transitions that occurred from the 1950s to 1979. Particular emphasis is given to the four development plans and the pillars on which the Maltese economy was based. Then second chapter delves deeper into the role of women and the improvement in their conditions that came about as a result of the development plans. The aftermath of World War Two brought about a better future for women, including a larger degree of independence. The last chapter tackles the concept of the welfare state and its relation to economic and social life in Malta. This dissertation therefore deals with the outcomes of the Maltese economy during the years 1959-1979.
