Abstract: Alongside Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, their respective wives Sarah, Rebekah, Leah and Rachel are considered by the biblical tradition as the ancestors of the people of Israel. The thesis aims at bringing out the character of each of these matriarchs as portrayed in the Book of Genesis. The function of each of them in the development of the story of the ancestors and in the characterization of the people of Israel will be also considered. Reference to other biblical texts, including the New Testament will be made where applicable. A chapter will be dedicated to each of the matriarchs and the conclusion will try to compare them.
