Abstract: Malta's extensive heritage plays a vital role in attracting cultural tourists in search of experience that goes beyond the traditional leisure product. Undoubtedly, the megalithic structures have become part of the Maltese Identity as their uniqueness made them synonymous with the Maltese Islands. The behaviour of those not directly involved with the industry still forms an integral part of the enhancement of the tourist's experience. This is where the role of education, particularly at an early stage, comes in. It instils in children a sense of responsibility and belonging of all natural and cultural heritage. The case study was based on Year 5 and 6 students' visits to Malta's Prehistoric Sites as set by the National Educational Curriculum. Benchmarks for analysing its effectiveness were studied so as to evaluate the effectiveness of the current methodology being used. The aim of this study is to analyse Malta's Prehistoric Sites contribution towards creating and enhancing the national responsibility. This is achieved by examining whether awareness between children and their forefathers is being generated. This study further analyses the educational benefits derived from Malta's Prehistoric Sites and finally the various interpretation available in relation to the National Educational Curriculum. The study is based on a thorough review of existing literature and data collected from observation of school groups' visits, questionnaires amongst children, teachers and curators, and informal interviews with various key players involved in site management.
