A study in local history since 1800 : Qormi

Abstract

When I had to decide the topic of my dissertation, the decision was very straight forward. Being my hometown, I was very keen to gather information on the history of Qormi and combine it together in the form of a dissertation. As the name suggests, this dissertation gives an overview of the history of Qormi from the beginning of the 19th century up till the present day, a time span which stretches over 200 years. Due to the immense time span involved and the word limit, it’s impossible to give a detailed account of the city’s history. Therefore, my tutor Professor Dominic Fenech, who had guided me in focusing my dissertation on the 19th Century and onwards, also guided me to focus on 6 main characteristics which altogether cover most of the period involved. These are: Population, Occupations, Education, and Standard of Living, Politics and Local Councils and Parochial Characteristics.
