Abstract: My aim in this project has been to analyse the issues of coastal zone management on a local scale, focusing on Marsascala and propose a strategy for a Coastal Zone Management Plan. By analyzing coastal issues on a local perspective, it is the intention that this study extrapolates common properties giving rise to coastal zone problems on a national scale, thus enabling it to serve as a pilot study for an Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan for the Maltese Islands. The first chapter of this study analyses the definition of the coastal zone and the issues affecting it. Coastal Zone Management is reviewed in Chapter 2. The following three chapters go through the methodology, a description of the case study and a report of survey. Chapter 6 concludes the study with recommendations for strategies towards a management plan. Five appendixes at the end of the study contain a collection of Structure Plan policies and Maltese legislation related to the subject. A set of maps showing the scheduled property in the study area is also found. A glossary of terms used in the text and a bibliography list are the last two appendixes in this study.
