Managing sickness absenteeism at the place of work : a legal and a practical approach

Abstract

To put forward a review of the current situation and evidence on sickness absence problems and the efficacy of different solutions that are proving effective in tackling short- and long-term sickness absence. This investigation includes results of a case study questionnaire to eight Human Resources personnel in different sectors of the Maltese industry. It also includes results of a questionnaire to company doctors. Existing data on sickness absenteeism at the place of work was reviewed. A comparative study between the Maltese and the United Kingdom's legislation was carried out. An Industrial Tribunal case on abuse of sick leave will be analysed. The study will conclude with a sample absence policy that can be adopted by any organisation. A number of recommendations will be put forward.
