Procedures for 1:1000 scale mapping

Abstract

This document has been written with the intention of being a reference manual to users and the people involved in the mapping process of the 1:1000 scale mapping. It should also serve as a means of communication between users and mappers. As the aims and objectives explain, both the users and the mappers, should understand better the making up of a map and appreciate the accuracy expected from the 1:000 maps being produced by the Mapping Unit. What is a map? What can one do with it? The introduction has been complied as to give the reader information on maps and the various reasons it can be used for. The introduction gives also the meaning of Geographic Information System (GIS) and how the data is stored and manipulated using this system. Most of the map users read information given in the map legend, but unfortunately cannot appreciate it enough, not understanding what it is all about. A clear description of map projections has been given, stating the map projection and zone system that is used for. the mapping of the Maltese Islands. The users are also informed on what a co-ordinate is and why UTM co-ordinates. This is the kind of information given in the legend. Photogrammetry is the process of transferring aerial photography information, into digital data. A very brief description on photogrammetry, aerial photography and photo scale has been given. The readers can also find information on map scale, accuracy, precision, enlarging and zooming and data format. The difference between precision and accuracy has been pointed out. Also, the users are being informed that accuracy remains the same even when enlarging or zooming. A section of this document deals with the procedures of handling the raw data coming from the photogrammetrists, including quality control and updating of maps. There is also a description and information on the 1:1000 maps hard copy layout. All the objects in a map are attributed data, such as feature codes, shape codes and data layers. The meaning of these attributes is given along with a list of feature codes, shape codes and data layers that exist in the 1:1000 mapping.
