Career guidance in perspective : an analysis of the service in educational settings through clients' understanding

Abstract

This study looks at the role of career guidance in education and its function in assisting young people to make decisions about learning and occupational opportunities in order to manage their chosen path. It focuses on how this service is conceived by young people who have an important role in this study. Their input in the research process will shed light on their experiences of the service and how this has influenced their recent transition from school to work or further education. This study analyses the methodologies used to reach students which practices are expected to ensure coherent, continuous and smooth transitions especially for those whose who are at risk of experiencing difficulties. This aspect has implications on quality assurance particularly within a scenario where the demand for service exceeds supply. Within such discourse, this study will highlight any existing limitations or shortcomings in current service provision. Currently, the lack of evaluative approaches that involve young people makes it quite difficult for the service providers to identify and address certain gaps in the service. This study also analyses how young people with diverse aspirations and interests have experienced their transition and the extent to which guidance was inclusive in its approach to help students. Whilst guidance has been instrumental in guiding and preparing most of the students, it is clear that much has to be done in terms of providing a service which is shaped around the needs of the main protagonists of the service.
