Abstract: Research suggest that parents occupy a unique and critical place in the transition networks of young people. However, so far this is not fully recognized by both parents themselves and our policy makers. Children exist within the protective circle of the family. This strongly held perception among the public influences the way people view every challenge or problem facing children or young people. No matter the issue education, career, poverty, crime, values etc .. the public looks first at the parents. This emphasis on parental responsibility so far was a barrier to broader public policy responses and to career planning. However, the role of parents in the successful transition of young people from school to work is an area that needs to receive explicit attention and action must be taken. Given that young people in area secondary schools have a greater chance to leave school early, without alternative career paths, they face long-term disadvantages in terms of higher levels of unemployment, lower incomes and an increased likelihood of ending up in low skill jobs with poor conditions and few opportunities for advancement. It is important for them to access post-secondary training and work options, which can lessen the impact of intergenerational poverty and social exclusion. Given that parents guide many of the decisions taken by these young people in their transition pathways, supporting the parents is one of the best ways to help young people through career transitions.
