Comparison and perceptions of occupational health and safety by foreign workers, working in the hotel industry in Malta

Abstract

This report was drawn up after interviews were held with 39 foreigners - immigrant's workers, all working in Four and Five Stars hotel in Malta. The concept of Safety and Health at the workplace and the comparison with the Maltese Safety and Health system was the prime project of this work The work conducted gives an overall view of Safety and Health at the workplace where by an analytic exercise was carried out through a basic questionnaire involving the workers in hospitality sector. The research findings revealed that most of the interviewees compared the level of Safety and Health systems of their country with that of Malta are likely to be at same levels. However, what it does also reveal is that some of the interviewees especially those coming from African and Asian countries show misconception of their views regarding the answers given in the questionnaire and also with there comparison towards our system of safety at work All in all, during the time spent with the interviewees, it was noticed that there was a significant and a collective consensus of what Safety and Health at the workplace has to these workers. Most of the work identify the binding that exist between the three main institutions the International Labour Organisation- World Health Organisation - European Union have worked for many years to improve the Safe Work system and ill health at the workplace.
