Abstract: A young education system, such as the one in the Republic of Maldives, poses many problems for the State. One of them is that it makes the State divert its funds to quantitative issues at the expense of qualitative issues. One such neglected qualitative issue is the appraising of teachers. This has made possible for many incompetent teachers to survive the system, making not only the quality of education suffer, but also creating unnecessary problems for the educational officials. Unfortunately, the staff appraisal scheme introduced in 1994 does not pave way for professional development. Hence, for the betterment of the children, a staff appraisal programme based on the professional development model is vital. Finally, even with limited resources, the sooner we start the better it will be for the future.
