Abstract: This study represents a case study of the In-service Training of Secondary School Teachers at the Pedagogical Institute (P.I.) of the Small Island State of Cyprus. The main aims of this study are: 1) to examine the in-service training of secondary school teachers at the P .I. in relation to in-service training programmes and the needs, motives and expectations of secondary school teachers. 2) to define the most significant problems concerning the in-service training of teachers at the P.I. 3) to make suggestions for the improvement of the teachers' in-service training and that of the P.I. This study consists of the following six chapters: • Chapter 1 presents the bibliography concerning the training of teachers internationally. • Chapter 2 refers to Secondary School Teachers' Education and Training in Cyprus with reference to the Cypriot educational system. • Chapter 3 refers to various research studies conducted in Cyprus on the subject of teachers' in-service training . • Chapter 4 describes the secondary school teachers in-service training at the P.I. • Chapter 5 presents an analysis and discussion of interview results of the research project. • Chapter 6 includes the conclusions and suggestions of the research project and of the whole study.
