Abstract: The purpose of this research project is to explore the cultural diversity of University of Malta students 2013/2014, that is, the exploration of the students’ interest, comfort and appreciation of both similarities and differences perceived in others. A trans-disciplinary philosophy and a broad conceptualisation of cultural diversity were adopted in this study. Cultural diversity refers to the beliefs and values, traditions - ways of behaving, and languages pertinent to social group. The participants were predominantly White-Maltese. The only criterion to participate in this research was that respondents needed to be UoM students during the academic year 2013/2014. The research instrument used was the Miville-Guzman Universality-Diversity scale (MGUDS) and the independent variables included age, gender, race, nationality, districts, religion, level of study, faculty clusters, and purpose of travel. 97% of the sample scored above the mid-score of the M-GUDS indicating positive campus climate environment. With the use of the Kruskal-Wallis test (non-parametric test) inferences can be made. Females and respondents who have travelled evidenced higher UDO scores. Race/nationality and level of study were respectively found to predict behavioural and feeling component of UDO. Psycho-education, diversity programmes that focus on prevention are needed for racism, disrespect and dehumanisation still linger amongst us. Levels of UDO affect the willingness to work with others from diverse backgrounds. Therefore, using UDO as a tool of inquiry and building diversity programmes based on the results might help to foster a more inclusive institution and society by reducing empathy barriers.
