Las conclusiones que Allen presenta en torno al proceso de desengaño experimentado por el caballero y la actitud final del escudero se aplica a la perfección al Don Quixote de 1834: "The epiphany does not include Sancho; on the contrary, tough it is he who articulates the statement that makes the explicit the implicit process of self-mastery as victory, his own situation presents a comic reduction of Don Quixote's self-discovery, since he is unable to assimilate fully the lessons of the governorship" (Allen 112). Antes de su Don Quixote había publicado A Sermon (1830), basado en el evangelio según San Mateo, a que siguieron Critical Remarks on the Art of Singing (1836) y The Tuscan Vase; a moral tale (1840, reeditado en 1854). Esta autora pertenecía a un entorno intelectual: era nuera de Dugald Stewart, catedrático de Filosofía Moral en la Universidad de Edimburgo (hijo a su vez de un catedrático de Matemáticas de la misma universidad), autor de numerosos trabajos científicos en cuyo honor se erigió un monumento en 1831 -aún en pie-, en uno de los lugares más prominentes de la ciudad.17 Su esposo, el Coronel Stewart, publicó Some considerations on the policy of the Government of India, especially with reference to the invasion of Burmah (Londres, 1826), Remarks on the State and Policy of the Nation (Londres, 1828) y An examination of the principles and tendency of the Ministerial plan of reform (Edimburgo, 1831). 11 En 2008, Mancing publicó su trabajo "The Origin of The Impossible Dream," donde demuestra que la frase "The Impossible Dream", que titula la famosa canción del musical Man of La Mancha de Dale Wasserman, tiene su origen en la adaptación teatral Don Quixote: A Dramatization of Cervantes' Novel (1913) del estadounidense Paul Kester.
