| Abstract: | Aerobiology is the study of living organisms, such as pollen and spores, suspended in the atmosphere. These organisms, specifically pollen, are one of the main causes of allergies. Several parameters can increase pollen counts such as location and weather conditions. For this study, fourteen microscope slides were placed for 24 hours in five different locations (both indoor and outdoor) at the University of Malta Msida campus over a five-month capture period. After collection, light microscope analysis at 400x magnification was used to observe and, where possible, identify the pollen and spores. This process, along with statistical analysis, confirmed that most pollen counts are greater in outdoor areas compared to indoor areas, however there were some exceptions. In addition, a positive relationship was observed between pollen count and two weather parameters: wind force and precipitation. This suggests that pollen counts are greater when wind is prominent, and no precipitation occurs. Furthermore, another positive relationship was noted with regards to apertures (doors and windows) and air conditioning systems. This indicated that pollen counts are often higher when apertures are open and air conditioning systems are switched on. |
