Abstract: The author suggests an analysis on what «going into politics » meant for Unamuno. Unamuno believed it was up to intellectuals to join political life and to instígate public opinion ex-parliament. Following Plato and Kierkegaard, Unamuno claims responsi- bility for contradictory statements. As a partesan of liberalism as an alternative to communism and conservatism considered as absolutist, he underlines the need to listen to the intra-historic people in desperate need ofbeing educated. In the author 's opinion Unamuno may be considered as one of the first 20th century democrats.
