Abstract: The genesis of modern architecture in Malta lagged considerably behind the early manifestations of modernism on the European continent. Prior to the Second World War there were very few examples of modernist buildings. These included the residences of two architects: Villino Ellul, Ta’ Xbiex designed by Salvatore Ellul (1891–1961) and Joseph Colombo’s (1907-1970) house in Rue D’Argens, Gżira, and the Muscat’s automobile showroom, Gżira designed by Silvio Mercieca (1888–1954). Modern architecture in Malta only gained momentum during the 1950s with the construction of new industrial buildings notably the new Farsons brewery in Mrieħel and several new government primary and secondary schools.
