| Abstract: | Insularity has to be dialectically studied together with its antipode: cosmopolitan city culture. The multi-layered relationship of insular communities within major cities is fundamental to an analysis of the art scene in the West. The focus of this paper, then, is the relationship between international art movements developing in the cosmopolitan scene and the reactions of Maltese artists, about how they responded and played an active innovative role within what was often a claustrophobic insular society. |
