Abstract: This research paper looks to identify the uses of emerging technology (ET) both current and potential within the context of the local public sector. The reasoning behind this research paper is to identify any possible emerging technologies which might not be presently active and describe how they can benefit the different sectors in different methods. This is done by first obtaining a general concept of the IT infrastructure within the various public sectors, followed by retrieving information regarding any plans for using ET within the respective sector, or whether such ET is already implemented. Finally, any other ET which is not mentioned during the interview process is referenced against other literature where the same ET is used, and this is discussed within a local context. The general understanding is that the majority of the public sectors are utilising some form of ET within each respective entity – with the main focus being Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. It was also found that the use of blockchain technology, despite the security benefits that it provides within several contexts, is not as proficient as other types of ET. Furthermore, this research paper looks at the possible implementations of numerous kinds of ET, including blockchain within the different entities by referencing other applications of the technology within the same sector.
