Abstract: The article explores various interpretations of the main individuals appearing in Ps 45, specifically the bride and her companions, in the light of the allegorical or nonallegorical reading of the king. Different configurations of who the protagonists represent are possible. However, a synchronic reading that is less historically orientated but that also takes neighbouring psalms into consideration offers a reading of the bride and her companions that is very rich theologically. Though allegorical and non-allegorical readings are both valid, the more pertinent interpretation is the one which offers greater hermeneutical links when taking the psalm’s Sitz im Psalter into consideration.
