Abstract: Society, Culture and Identity in Early Modern Malta seeks to explain how Maltese society evolved in the crucial years following the Ottoman Siege of Malta of 1565. It shows how the Order of St John managed to govern effectively through the closer interaction between the state and society. The book discusses two broad themes, the first of which concerns the dramatic success of the Order of St John in its ability to govern Malta. The second relates to the development of an ethnic identity. Basing himself on original archival research the author shows how the Order of St John acted as an impetus to help transform Malta from an isolated post of the Kingdom of Sicily into a minor entrepot of the Mediterranean.
