This study explores whether parental incarceration paves way to potential stigmatization and labelling children face. Researchers often consider the children of incarcerated parents as the “hidden victims” as there is not enough research conducted on the affects that parental incarceration has on them. These children are often stigmatized because of their parents’ situation and labelled as “children of incarcerated parents” because of their situation. The stigma faced by these children can have detrimental effects on their wellbeing and their relationships with others and could also create a stumbling block in life. This research employed qualitative methods of data gathering and analysis, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with five professionals who work directly with incarcerated parents and their families, including the children. These professionals were chosen due to their experience and knowledge on this subject and gave their insight on the phenomena related to potential stigmatization. Findings show that children tend to be stigmatized because incarceration of their parents and that training is necessary for professionals who work with these children and their families. Additionally, recommendations propose that more training should be given to professionals and that more awareness must be raised amongst society.en_GB
