Abstract: Play is the work of children - their main means of enjoyment, an indispensable occupation, offering them benefits conducive to their development. But is play respected as such? This study aimed to explore play in this light, with a view to obtain the ultimate meaning of play, from the main source - the child. In doing so, this study explored this integral occupation by answering questions which included, the different types of play children participate in and value, as well as the influences that may affect these choices. To gather such meaningful qualitative data, a Mosaic approach was creatively utilised in capturing children’s voices. It established a sense of authority within the nine participants, whose ages ranged from 5 to 7 years, allowing them to be the leaders in their own research. Four pertinent themes were highlighted through the study, shedding light on areas of creativity, children’s social and physical environments, and the controversial use of technology in play. The conclusive findings acknowledged the children’s desire to have a voice in their own play choices. They epitomised children’s creativity through their diverse play types, and questioned their opportunity in doing so. The findings target to inspire, and lend more knowledge to those forming part of a child’s life. May parents and professionals gain insight on children’s wants, needs, and values of play, and be encouraged to ultimately offer them the best opportunity to grow and develop.
