Abstract: The article is a keynote lecture that was given at the Hungarian Academy of Science, Pécs, on 27 September 2022 at an event in connection with the commencement of a project of collaboration between the Episcopal Theological College and the Hungarian Academy of Science. It begins with a description of the historical setting of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Malta and notes the contribution of theology to freedom and culture, particularly within a European setting. It also focuses on how theology merges with other disciplines, asking questions about God that give a fuller understanding of reality. In this context, the critical voice of theology in the contemporary world is highlighted, as are the hermeneutical tasks of this discipline.
