Abstract: This dissertation explores the cultural dynamics and relations present in a migrant music project in Malta which is led by a Maltese private record label, in collaboration with service providers, namely NGOs and mentors, and is also funded by the Arts Council Malta. By adopting a case study approach, the qualitative study gives an in-depth understanding of the project, focusing intensely on the socio-cultural dynamics, as guided by scholarly literature on music and migration at the core of its theoretical framework. The in-depth interviews, which took place with individuals involved the project involved in different roles and activities, followed by thorough thematic analysis, allowed for more concrete understandings of their experiences. For migrant artists in particular, music making is embedded in their operations within the music industry and the project itself, their complex socio-cultural relations with African homeland, Maltese and international connections and in networking to develop and establish themselves as musicians locally and internationally. Through the use of music, artists are able to maintain existing relations with particular communities they feel part of, reach distinct audiences, and make use of spaces and opportunities to actively demonstrate their ‘hybrid’ identities or flexibility in their careers. The study explores the possibilities of social integration and inclusion, particularly through music relations and collaborations, together with the questioning of ideas of music as a universal language, keeping in mind the challenges faced by migrants within the music industry and broader society.
