Abstract: Resilience is the strength to walk against an opposing wind. The term ‘resilience’ appears for the first time in a writing of Francis Bacon of 1626, in order to show how an echo bounces back. It is particularly used in physics, with the aim of describing the capacity of materials in resisting collisions without breaking. This term was taken on by the area of psychology to explain the phenomenon in persons who, albeit having experienced traumas, great sufferings, sicknesses, wars, violence, accidents or natural catastrophes, have restored their own equilibrium, which has helped them to live a serene and gratifying existence.
