Abstract: Nearly one hundred years ago, precisely in 1922, Romano Guardini had already felt the need to help the faithful in their understanding and appreciation of the liturgy when he published his book Von Heiligen Zeichen (Sacred Signs) in which he reflects upon, and explains, various signs, symbols and gestures present in liturgical celebrations. Be it the symbolism of candles, or the meaning of the altar, Guardini made his reflections accessible to all those who wished to understand more of the mysteries of our faith as expressed in the liturgy.
