| Abstract: | This study examines the introduction of political education at the sixth-form level in Malta, aiming to explore its purpose, challenges, potential outcomes for students, and their perceptions regarding this subject. The main research questions guiding this investigation are: (1) What is the purpose of introducing a study unit on political education for sixth-form students? (2) What are sixth-form students' perceptions about the introduction of political education as a subject? To address these questions, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with key stakeholders involved in the implementation of political education in Malta. Additionally, an online questionnaire was administered to young adults aged 18-24, who were currently enrolled at the University of Malta and who were first-time voters. The qualitative and quantitative data collected were analysed to gain insights into the purpose, challenges, potential outcomes, and students' perceptions of political education. The findings of this study highlight that the purpose of introducing political education at the sixth-form level is to foster students' understanding of political systems, democratic principles, and civic engagement. However, challenges and barriers were identified, including curriculum constraints, lack of resources, and resistance from some educators and policymakers. Despite these challenges, potential outcomes for students include enhanced political awareness, critical thinking skills, and active participation in democratic processes. The study reveals that sixth-form students generally hold positive perceptions regarding the introduction of political education as a subject. They believe that it would provide them with an understanding of politics, help them make informed decisions, and promote political literacy among their peers. Students anticipate that political education would have a significant impact on their understanding of politics, enabling them to navigate complex political landscapes and contribute to society as informed citizens. This exploratory study sheds light on the purpose, challenges, potential outcomes, and students' perceptions of introducing political education at the sixth-form level in Malta. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating political education into the curriculum, despite the identified barriers, to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills for active citizenship and informed political participation. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on political education and provides valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and curriculum developers in Malta and beyond. |
