Abstract: This study is based on a number of manuscript notebooks held at the National Archives, Rabat, Malta. There is a series of such notebooks or libretti written in Italian from the 1st June 1743 to the end of February 1747 but the sequence is not continuous as there are missing ones covering several months in each year, the only complete year being 1746.These libretti confirm the evidence that the Mediterranean has, since hundreds of years, been an active zone of naval warfare with Malta as a trysting post for seafarers and their ships; and also a barrier, through its quarantine system, for halting the maritime spread of communicable diseases from the Middle East to Western Europe.
