Abstract: The first chapter introduces Malta as a mixed European jurisdiction with strong elements of Civil law and Common law. The Maltese legal culture is a reflection of its history, and the reader is introduced to the Maltese legal system as a microcosm of European legal history. Reference is made to the main state institutions, the set-up of the court system and how Malta has now become a Member State of the European Union.
