Abstract: This article discusses the aerial defence of the island of Malta during World War II. Since the outbreak of the war Malta was planned to have four squadrons of modern fighter planes, however up till the 11th June 1940 the air defence of the island consisted only of six obsolete “Sea Gladiators” biplanes. This lack of planning had to be rectified when hostilities with Italy started.
