| Abstract: | The aim of this project was to design, build and test an asymmetrical bending experiment, to be used in the solid mechanics laboratory at the University of Malta. The main objective of the setup was to demonstrate the effects of asymmetrical bending and allow students to corroborate the results with the theory covered in the Mechanics of Materials study-units. Before the design process was initiated, a thorough market research was carried out to evaluate the different products available on the market, and highlight any reoccurring features or issues present in these setups. The design was then developed using a systematic approach which tackled each design decision thoroughly and effectively, through proper analysis and reasoning. These design decisions were then incorporated into a final design that would meet the specifications highlighted through the market research. During the design process, various calculations were carried out and documented to ensure that the design decisions are appropriately made, and expected values for each experiment were obtained to be used during analysis. The parts of the final design were then purchased or machined, and then assembled at the University of Malta. Following the assembly, testing was carried out on the setup, to obtain the experimental results, and gain familiarity with the setup. A thorough analysis was then carried out comparing experimental data to simulated data that was obtained using finite element analysis. The analysis aimed to quantify the effectiveness of the setup and to highlight any inadequacies in performance. A discussion was then carried out to discuss any potential causes for any problems. Finally, lab sheets were developed to accompany the lab setup to inform and guide students through the procedure and analysis of the data. |
