Abstract: The withdrawal of a garrison is an affair always accompanied by overtones of sadness and disharmony, and when, as in the case of Malta, it will withdraw a main prop of the island's economy, the occasion calls for a high degree of skill and kindness to ease the transition to financial independence. Peter Kirk, MP, maintains that the terms of the treaty by which Malta became politically independent in September 1964 have been too literally interpreted, and that the Maltese, outstandingly loyal as they were in 'the days of British. suzerainty, now deserve better treatment.
