Abstract: The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is a prehistoric underground monument consisting of a series of interconnecting chambers, some of which contain elaborately carved architectural features and painted decorations. This site is gradually deteriorating due to the interaction of climatic, physical, chemical, biological and human factors. Studies have been carried out over the past six years to identify the causes of the deterioration, and have included monitoring of the internal microclimate, biological analysis, and research into the problem of water accumulation, involving the participation of both local and foreign experts. This has resulted in an ambitious project for the continued preservation of the site, which will include the stabilisation of the internal environmental conditions, controlling the sources of water infiltration, removal of the biological infestations and improving the presentation and interpretation of the site.
