| Abstract: | This research project aims to explore the viewpoints of individuals occupying leadership roles about mental health management within the workplace, with a specific focus on those employed within the public sector. The objective is to uncover the way these managerial figures conceptualise mental health within the professional setting. Furthermore, it delves into their assessments of the competencies and impediments they encounter when addressing the mental well-being of their workforce during employment. The research employs a qualitative methodology to gain a comprehensive comprehension of management's outlook on mental health in the work environment. Data was gathered via eight semi-structured interviews involving individuals in leadership roles within the public sector. These participants, responsible for overseeing employee groups, were chosen to gain deeper insights into specific obstacles that necessitate resolution. Furthermore, alongside conducting interviews, this project chose to analyse two publicly accessible documents titled ‘Managing Mental Health at Work’ and ‘Employee Wellbeing: A Line Manager’s Guide’ released by the Employee Support Program (ESP) unit to gather a diverse array of viewpoints. The findings shed light on the complexities of overseeing mental health in the workplace, encompassing both immediate and prolonged strategies that management employs to tackle mental health issues. Additionally, it unveils the hesitations some managers face when handling workplace crises. In light of these findings, the final chapter offers actionable recommendations to enhance managerial methods, fostering a better work environment that significantly impacts individuals. Moreover, this research opens avenues for further exploration in this critical domain, facilitating ongoing advancements in the realm of workplace mental health. |
