Abstract: This comparative qualitative study examines the economic gains of marijuana legalisation, together with its consequential socio-environmental impacts and costs. By using a thematic analysis embedded in the PRISMA method, the data collected uses a pragmatic and rigorous identification and selection method. The research’s results show that there are clear economic gains to expect when legalising marijuana, either or both medically and recreationally. The main gains are revenue from markets for businesses, job creation, market growth, and tax revenues going towards government funding. Contrarily, some results also prove some apprehensive aspects of marijuana, such as its dangers towards personal and public health and safety, its environmental impact, and its socio-financial cost. However, the results also confirm that legalisation actually helps communities reduce the drug’s socio-financial and health and safety impacts.
