| Abstract: | This study delves into the realm of Industry 4.0 technologies and their intersection with the manufacturing sector in Malta. Employing a multi-methodological approach that fuses both qualitative and quantitative methods, this research offers an in-depth exploration of the local Industry. The primary focus centres on definition of skills and the identification of skill gaps within this evolving industrial context by highlighting intrinsic and extrinsic factors across different age groups. The findings resonate with the growing significance of soft skills in the workforce, highlighting the essential role they play in the successful integration of I4.0 technologies. In light of the phenomenon known as ‘accelerating technological change’, it is imperative that academics, and the workforce engage in a continuous process of acquiring, enhancing and updating their skill sets. This emphasizes the timeliness of lifelong learning as a catalyst for individual and collective growth. The educational journey of students also emerges as a critical cornerstone in bridging these skill gaps. It becomes evident that a synergy between academia and industry is essential to nurture a workforce well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities presented by the era of I4.0 technologies. Furthermore, the industry faces challenges related to globalization and the competition for highly skilled labour. To revitalize the attractiveness of the manufacturing sector, it is imperative to actively promote it as an innovative and economically significant industry. The study also outlines opportunities for change in education, upskilling initiatives, and public policies to attract skilled employees for future prosperity within the industry. |
