Abstract: This book is about a crucial substance that we hardly ever see in museums, and yet has played a decisive part in the story of human endeavour. Water is believed to be the most abundant compound on Earth, perhaps even in the universe, yet fresh water is but a small fraction of the planet's water. Fresh water is a prerequisite for human survival. It shaped where humans settled and thrived, it determined which ·plants they could grow, and which animals they could rear, and where. Not too surprisingly, therefore, water has potent symbolic associations in many societies. In a small island such as Malta, which has had a semi-arid climate for long periods of time, this resource is all the more precious. This chapter picks up the story of water in Malta in the Neolithic period, when the first farmers settled on the islands.
