dc.description.abstractPurpose – The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of the attractiveness of the Maltese Shipping Register when compared to what is offered by the competition, keeping in mind that this might have a repercussion on increasing deadweight tonnage (DWT) and net registered tonnage (NRT). Design/Methodology/Approach – This study starts by researching and analysing Transport Malta (TM) findings related to the rise in rankings of Malta’s register amongst competitive shipping registers to ranking sixth (globally) and first in Europe. Chapter two serves the reader as an introduction to the Malta Shipping Registry. Methodologically, the research will follow in finding statistics on the vessels registered with the Malta flag, and findings on foreign registers and the benefits they offer to their clients. The study then follows to the interviews carried out with members that form crucial parts of the registration of vessels, namely TM officials and Maritime Lawyers. Findings – Through the conclusion of this study, it is clear that Malta’s benefits are very attractive, but due to a bad reputation historically, and the lack of positive publicity from Malta’s end, we are not moving forward at full potential. Research Limitations/Implications – The research has its limiting factors, including: 1. Time constrained factors; 2. Even though the recipients of the interview play a crucial part in the shipping registry, it could have been more ideal to interview ship owners as they hold the choice between different registers; 3. An element of bias was not excluded; 4. Due to the lack of information made publicly available, it was not possible to include a wider variety of foreign shipping registers, to be considered further. Practical Implications – Suggestions may be taken forward by TM and legal bodies, to work together to get the message of positive improvement across to all stakeholders. The lack of credit given to both agencies and publicity could be a factor that adds to the bad reputation gained through previous accidents. Originality/Value – The results of this study provide a clear insight as to what the Maltese officials consider as having a competitive advantage in the shipping industry. The results show the reader how the lack of positive advertisement is a reason why the ship registry is not moving further up the rankings among competition at a constant rate (incline).en_GB
