Abstract: In Lawrence Sterne's famous Sentimental journey it appears that a clergyman from York, in the middle of the Seven Years War, could suddenly rush off to Paris. This is almost correct: the basis of the book may be Sterne's tour on the Continent in 1765 - 6, but it is true that he first crossed the Channel in January 1762, that he was welcomed in the Parisian salons and was able to summon his wife and daughter to join him. The peace treaty was signed in the following year.
