Abstract: Recent discussions of Milton's attitudes towards war, and of the way in which the War in Heaven in Paradise Lost may reflect these, have produced some lively skirmishes. The traditional 'epic' view of the War in Heaven, though puzzling to penetrating minds like Johnson's, was more or less upheld until Arnold Stein's essay in Answerable Style, arguing that it is a kind of grand satiric scherzo. Stein's view has proved attractive and influential, generating scholarly elaborations and consolidations like those of James Freeman and Stella Revard, but it has also met some fairly strong challenges from critics such as Robert Fallon and Murray Roston.
